Bop Local ~ Sat 30 Aug ~ Chorlton Irish Club

For our August Chorlton Bop Local, DJs for the evening will be Phil Beckett, Mark Smith & Martin Holland. There are quite a few birthdays/parties & various celebrations going on that night, so the music will definitely reflect that ~ lots of old school house & dance tunes.

For anyone who hasn’t been to Chorlton Irish Club…the venue has a large car park at the back and it’s a 5 minute walk from Chorlton Metrolink Station. Most Bop Locals take place on the ground floor in the main area*, where there’s a large dance-floor, seating & a great bar with excellent staff & regular drinks promotions. On our busier nights there’s also a bottle bar next to the cloakroom. We also use the adjacent Lounge Bar as more of a chill-out room. There’s wheelchair access to the club too and the air conditioning comes in handy on those hot, summer nights!!

*For our parties & ‘Not Quite New Year’s Eve’ nights, we open upstairs in the club and have additional DJs.

Doors 8.30pm-1am.

After our scorching summer break, Laugh Local will be returning to Chorlton Irish Club on Friday 5th September. Laugh Local host, Justin Moorhouse has been performing his show, This is What I Am, at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival throughout August, and is currently on our TV screens in Coronation Street as Rover Return rival pub, The Flying Horse’s landlord! Justin’s guest comedians for September’s Laugh Local will be Will Franken, Duncan Oakley and Nicky Wilkinson.

Will Franken is a character comedian, satirist mimic and actor based in London. Born and raised in Missouri, he holds a master’s degree in English, with a specialisation in Restoration and 18th Century Literature. After making a name for himself in New York’s Greenwich Village’s alternative theatre scene, Will moved to San Francisco where he regularly won awards for ‘Best Comedian’. In 2007, he made his television debut on BBC America’s ‘The World Stands Up’ , then ~ as a devout Anglophile ~ he moved to the UK where he continues to win over audiences.

‘I cannot remember one moment of this show that wasn’t funny. I am still laughing!’ (The Scotsman).

With musical skills that would easily fit into many rock bands, Duncan Oakley performs an infectious mix of musical comedy and stand up with one of his trusty guitars by his side. With an eye and ear for the silly, rude, playful and downright irritating occurrences of life, Duncan musters up songs that not only make you laugh, they bury into the recesses of your mind and find you a humming tune with a smile on your face 3 days later, confused and wondering where it’s come from.

‘Leaping between stupidity & pure brilliance!’ (Yorkshire Evening Post)

Nicky Wilkinson is an actress, stand-up comedian, improviser and sketch performer. Her comedy mixes charming, real-life anecdotes with just the right dose of self-deprecation and often brilliantly funny improvised riffs with the crowd. Nicky’s impressive stage presence, great comic timing and considerable comedy performance experience are ensuring she’s already moving quickly through the stand-up comedy ranks!

Doors open at 6.30pm for bar and free pasty supper at Chorlton Irish Club. The comedy starts at 8.30pm.

Tickets for Laugh Local on Friday 5th September are £10 & available online here: https://www.ticketline.co.uk/order/tickets/13296217/bop-local-presents-laugh-local-chorlton-irish-club-2014-09-05-18-30-000 or call Pearse McDaid at Chorlton Irish Club on 0161 881 2898

It was great to see Laugh host, Justin Moorhouse on BBC 1’s Pointless recently, partnering Coronation Street’s Jennie McAlpine.

Justin will be having a short break from Laugh Local at Chorlton Irish Club until September ~ & having a stint on Coronation Street (!!) ~ so in the meantime, we’re dead pleased that his good friend and stand-in MC for the evening will be actor, presenter, compère and stand-up, Trevor Lynch.

Trevor regularly hosts nights at The Comedy Store and has appeared in numerous television, theatre and film productions, including Ken Loache’s award-winning, Looking For Eric. Trevor’s probably most recognised as Coronation Street’s Patrick Tussell, the taxi-driver working for Steve McDonald (2002–2005). Trevor has even done a guest spot at Laugh Local recently so we’re looking forward to seeing him play host for the evening!

As always, we have a top line-up for this July Laugh Local will be George Ryegold, Simon Heaven, Jen Williams and Andrew Bird.

George Ryegold is the alter ego of performer Toby Williams ~ a surgeon moonlighting as a stand-up! George is a sleazy, stingy, gloomy, tweedy doctor, with an unhealthily casual approach to some of the workings of the human body. With all the characteristic grace and humility of a cornered wasp, George selflessly pits his formidable intellect against humanity’s ills and, if you’re very unlucky, lets slip a glimpse into the hidden pain of a tortured genius!

Andrew Bird wanted to be a comedian from the moment he watched the Young Ones on Comic Relief when he was eight years old. Since starting in stand up, he’s performed all over the world as well as doing regular TV warm ups for Have I Got News For You and Deal or No Deal. He’s also supported Lee Hurst and Rhod Gilbert on tour. Andrew boasts perfect timing, crisp delivery and spot-on observations. His comedy is derived from his lack of identity and it’s this everyman persona that provides his core appeal.

Simon Heaven is noted for his trademark cerebral one-liners and assured, warm affability. His observations are often uniquely placed, and executed with a professional, delightfully laid-back quirk. Simon is also a regular guest at New Stuff at The Comedy Store ~ his material was used extensively by the BBC in 2013 to promote the BBC New Comedy Award 2013.

Jen Williams is a regular Laugh Local ‘fan’ but this will be the first time she takes the stage at the Irish Club. Jen is an acclaimed film and theatre actor and started doing stand-up last year, wowing audiences at The Frog & Bucket. She recently won the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Performance in Salford Stuffers and has appeared in many TV shows, including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Cops.

Doors open 6.30pm at Chorlton Irish Club for the bar and free pasty supper. Comedy starts at 8pm and finishes around 11pm. Bar and music till late.
